Top 5 Reasons to Visit Sapa..!

Those who have visited Sapa before will understand why it is such a special place. Here’s our reasoning….see if you agree!

1. Sapa is stunningly beautiful. With its position in the mountains near the Chinese border, surely no-one can disagree that Sapa and its verdant rice terraces are simply breathtaking. Travelling from Lao Cai, up the valley and into the hills has to be one of the most beautiful short trips in Vietnam.

2. Mix it with the ethnic minority groups. For a fantastic and authentic culture ‘hit’ Sapa is the place.  Of the 54 ethnic minority groups in Vietnam, 8 of them call this region home including Hmong, Dao (pronounced Zao or Yao), Tay, Giay (pronounced Zai), Muong, Thai, Hoa (ethnic Chinese) and Xa Pho. Over 70% of the population are either Hmong or Dao.  Many of these groups still dress in traditional costume making for a visual feast of colour and contrast.

3. Sapa – the adventure capital of Vietnam. The hills lend themselves to some superb treks, exploration by bike, scooter or motorbike, swims in waterfalls, homestays with local families plus the opportunity to climb Vietnam’s highest mountain – Mount Fansipan at 3 143 metres.

4. The shopping is great. Unexpectedly the shopping in this town is great!  The main street is packed with opportunities to purchase everything from local handicrafts (make sure they are legitimate and not Chinese versions) to ‘North Face’ adventure gear.  Indeed, there’s lots of opportunity to pick up some great gifts to take home.

5. The climate. For those who have travelled around South East Asia and need a little respite from the intense and humid heat, Sapa provides just that.  Clear mountain air surrounds the hillsides and the temperature can be quite low in the winter season.  Evenings may need a jumper or jacket – a welcome change from the heat of the lowland cities.

There are many more reasons to visit Sapa – these are just a few ideas.  Without doubt though it is one of the ‘must see’ destinations in Vietnam!
